Iron Mountain Helps PinnacleHealth Improve Patient Service Levels and Physician Satisfaction While Reducing Costs

Hospital’s Radiology Group Deploys Iron Mountain’s Comprehensive Health Information Management Program and X-ray on Demand Service

March 6, 2006

Boston, MA - Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM), the global leader in information protection and storage services, today announced that PinnacleHealth has deployed the Company’s Comprehensive Health Information Management (CHM) Program and X-ray on Demand service, a new addition to Iron Mountain’s portfolio of specialized health information management services.PinnacleHealth, a four-hospital, not-for-profit health system servicing central Pennsylvania, has improved patient service levels and physician satisfaction while reducing costs by transferring management of its radiology films to Iron Mountain and implementing its X-ray on Demand service as an efficient way to digitize historical x-rays and conduct side-by-side study comparisons.

Iron Mountain’s CHM program enables hospitals, like PinnacleHealth, to significantly reduce costs associated with medical record and x-ray film storage by consolidating and outsourcing their entire file room operations. By implementing Iron Mountain’s CHM Program, PinnacleHealth has been able to significantly speed its turnaround time in locating and retrieving x-ray files.X-rays previously stored across five locations are now centralized in one off-site facility managed by Iron Mountain. In addition to centralizing radiology films, Iron Mountain’s inventory and indexing system allows files to be tracked and delivered in less than half of the time it previously took the hospital to retrieve an x-ray.

Iron Mountain’s service employs a holistic approach to medical records and x-ray film management that enables hospitals to combine active and inactive patient files into a single system. And by outsourcing the file maintenance operations, healthcare professionals can focus on more strategic issues such as transitioning to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and revenue improvement.

“Our goal is to completely turnaround a patient report within 24 hours,” said Sandra Brown- Grant, ancillary supervisor at PinnacleHealth.“With Iron Mountain’s inventory system and service delivery our turnaround of patient reports has improved dramatically and so has our physician satisfaction.”

With X-ray on Demand, PinnacleHealth further improved its workflow processes by digitizing historical films on an as-needed basis.Needed x-rays are pulled at the Iron Mountain Record Center, digitized and formatted into a DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) image that is then sent to the hospital’s PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) over a secure connection.X-ray on Demand allows PinnacleHealth’s radiologists to conduct side-by-side study comparisons of new and historical x-rays, improving productivity since radiologists can more accurately review a greater number of patient studies when presented electronically alongside new digital modalities. In addition, having a digitized image allows for remote diagnoses and eliminates the need for radiologists to conduct double reads of x-rays when a patient visits the hospital during non-business hours.

“One of the biggest advantages of X-ray on Demand is seen in the hospital’s emergency room,” said Rick Strohl, PACS administrator for PinnacleHealth.“After hours, our ER is supported remotely by an off-site radiology group.Previously, if a patient came in late at night, the remote radiologist would read the new film, but we had to wait until the next day for another radiologist to review the comparison films. With X-ray on Demand, we can now request digitized historical images after hours, thereby eliminating double reads and further reducing costs.”

“By streamlining workflow processes around the storage and management of medical records and radiology films, Iron Mountain is able to help healthcare organizations like PinnacleHealth reduce costs and boost service levels,” said Mark Rempe, vice president of Iron Mountain’s Health Information Services. “With improved workflow and cost-savings, hospitals can focus on what’s really important – improving patient care.”
